Gyori, Garrity, Sine Shine in Reno Wins Over Mansfield

By Phillip Goodman

November 17, 2025

Dating back to January of 2022, the Reno Ice Raiders have taken 10 in a row from the Mansfield Barracudas with 3-1 and 6-2 wins in the weekend series presented by Goettl Air. Six different Ice Raiders contributed to the scoring in Friday's victory then on Saturday the fans were treated to the Garrity-Sine-Watson Show. The line of Johnny, Hunter, and Bobby respectively combined for five of Reno's six goals and totaled 14 points. Justis Gyori deservedly earned both wins in net for Reno.

Mansfield got on the board early when Collin Ekins found himself all alone in the left circle after three Ice Raiders got caught battling for the puck in the corner. Ekins had more than enough time to look up and find daylight over Justis’ right shoulder for the opening goal.

After a seemingly harmless dump in, Mansfield turned the puck over up the middle to an awaiting Hunter Sine. Sine rifled a shot over Messick to tie the game 1-1.

With Noah Ledbetter in the box for tripping, the Ice Raiders went to work on the Brewer's Cabinet Power Play. They worked the puck around the perimeter and found John Garrity wide open in the slot who fired off the post and in for the power-play goal and the 2-1 lead. Hunter Sine and Andrew Peterson got the assists.

Almost three minutes later, Nathan Hogge from the right point fired a shot as Jake Minton was coming through the slot. Minton deflected the shot over Messick for the 3-1 lead. Nathan Hogue and Matt Robinson assisted on the play.

Reno’s lead fell into jeopardy as they were assessed four consecutive penalties leading to back-to-back two-man advantages for the Barracudas. Reno managed to fight off all four Peterson Wealth Management Penalty Kills and keep the lead intact. Justis Gyori made his best Brain Bean saves of the night during the kill time.

Josh Messick nearly stole the game again from Reno though, as he stopped 42 of 45 shots on the night.

"It was the best hockey we've played all season," Sine said after the game. "It was a great performance by us and I loved the fans tonight. It was great."

To start Saturday night, the Ice Raiders broke the ice five minutes in. In one of the prettiest passing and fastest puck movement sequences, Bobby Watson got the puck from behind the net to Sine who made a quick touch pass to Johnny Garrity and Garrity's rocket beat Ernest for the 1-0 lead.

Seven minutes later on a Brewer's Cabinet Power Play, Jake Minton moved the puck from behind the net to Sine again on the wall who teed up Weston Nash for a one-time laser and the 2-0 lead.

With just under a minute to go, Johnny Garrity churned the feet from the right half wall towards the crease and buried another one past Ernest. Sine and Tyrell got the assists for the 3-0 lead going into the first break. Reno outshot Mansfield 12 to 5 in that first frame even after Mansfield had three power-play tries.

Vauhgn Harter broke Gyori's shut out bid in the first minute of the second period after the puck rolled away from an Ice Raider defender and he got an easy one from the bottom of the left circle.

Exactly 2 minutes later, Garrity sent the hats flying on the ice when his wrister beat Ernest for the 4-1 lead. Hunter Sine picked up his fourth assist of the night while Bobby Watson got his second helper.

On a 4-on-3 power-play for the Ice Raiders, Sine said 'enough with the assists I’ll do it myself' as he shot an absolute laser past Ernest for the 5-1 lead. Watson and Johnny Garrity got the helpers this time.

"We put Johnny, Hunter, and Bobby together on the power play to see if we could get something going and it worked," said Ice Raiders's Coach Tim Tookey. "They played so well together that we left them as a line. The other lines we feel are strong now too."

"I'm so honored to play with those guys," Assistant Captain Garrity said after the game. "Hopefully we can keep it rolling."

Matt Robinson capped the 6-2 scoring for Reno when Hogge tapped Roger Hutchinson's rebound to Robinson wide open on the wing.

The Barracudas kept it close all weekend yet the Ice Raiders found ways to pull ahead both nights. Part of Reno's dominance started in the dots as they beat Mansfield in faceoffs 38-27 on Friday and 39-31 on Saturday. Special teams were effective as well. Reno went 3-for-9 on Brewer's Cabinet Power Plays and killed 12 of 13 Peterson Wealth Management Penalty Kills.

"The guys know they have to play their best against the Barracudas," Tookey added. "We have and that's why we have been successful."

Reno finished the season-opening homestand with a 5-1 record, Gyori going 3-1 and Justin Sand 2-0.

"Justis has been standing on his head all season so far and I'm looking forward to having him in Breck next weekend," Garrity added. "Obviously Sandy's been great when he's here as well. We've got an unreal goaltending duo so we're super lucky. We always try to play our best in front of those guys and they always back us up so it's great to have them"

The Ice Raiders' visit to Breckenridge will be the home opener for the Vipers who were just swept in Santa Rosa. The game might be streamed on the Vipers YouTube Channel. The Growlers will be in Reno Dec. 19 and Dec. 20 for a series presented by LT Automotive. Tickets will go on sale Dec. 13 at 11a.m. PST.
